Essences at the Dentists
I am scared of the dentist.
They are honestly always lovely humans… it’s just that the dental work is so intense and has been a frequent area of imbalance for me. Cavities, root canals, crowns, receding gums… I get scared that when I go they’re judging me and are going to find another handful of teeth they’d like to drill into!
No thank you!
I had some dental work scheduled for this afternoon which I was very anxious about, so I began working with Bach’s Five Flower Essence Blend (rock rose, clematis, impatiens, star of bethlehem, and cherry plum) the day before. I added Willow because I felt resentful at having to go get more work done, as well as just wanting that comforting compassion that Willow essence provides. White Yarrow was my other addition, as I felt like I needed protection for my energy, emotions, and body.
I still didn’t want to enter the clinic, and I think had I been responsible of driving myself there I may have just ended up at a bookstore instead. (Maybe tomorrow!)
I took some essences right before going in and was still nervous. Maybe half an hour into the dental work, with bits of tooth flying through the air, I hit my limit and put my hand up for them to stop. This was a big change for me as I would typically power through until the end and collapse into an emotional wreck as soon as I got back in the car. I had a little cry and the dentist and hygienist were very kind and shocked (… I also mean… come on! who likes this stuff?!). I took a dose of essences which I kept in my pocket, and was ready to go again. The rest of the appointment went pretty well. I continued focusing on my breath and relaxing my shoulders, and by the end, despite having had a 2.5 hour appointment, felt more emotionally stable than I typically have in the past.
To keep the good work rolling, I made sure to pamper myself the rest of the day with a bath, a little bit of walking, tasty food, and more essences.
So while the essences didn’t stop me from experiencing strong emotions, they enabled me to work through them in a healthier way.
I have heard about using Snapdragon essence, which following the Doctrine of Signatures, suggests that the flower’s jaw-like structure is helpful for healing imbalances related to the mouth! Banana essence is another essence that is supposed to help with mouth related issues as well as balancing sugar metabolism and cravings.
Bach’s Five Flower remedy is also known as “Rescue Remedy” by the company Nelson’s
The Doctrine of Signatures is the understanding that animals, rocks, plants, and fungi have visible characteristics that can indicate what part of the body they have an affinity for.
