Starting Your Next Creative Project

Sometimes we wait for clarity, for a sign from the universe, for just one more confirmation that our idea is a good one and that we should act on it. A sign comes, reassurance are spoken… yet we wait a little longer to really make sure we are on the right path…

I’ve been wanting to step into the role of Creative Mentor more these days, yet haven’t felt safe enough to do so. It’s so risky to try new things, what if I’m terrible at it? What if I don’t like it? What if no one else digs it? There are always uncertainties at the start of a new creative endeavour, and so it’s up to us to calm our nervous systems and take tiny steps forward.

Using brain retraining techniques, we can teach our nervous system that we are safe and that acting on this perceived dangerous path is OK. So whatever it is you’d like to start that has felt too scary, too big, or too risky, try out these four steps to calmly walk in the direction you feel pulled towards;

  1. Slow your breath. Take 5 deep inhales with 5 even slower exhales.

  2. Visualize yourself doing the tiniest step possible of your desired creative endeavour. Really land in your visualization and imagine feeling calm while you are doing the action.

  3. Take your tiny step in real life. Make it small - 2 to 10 minutes maximum. Keep your breathing slow.

  4. Stop wherever you are at and celebrate your accomplishment! Give yourself a treat, time to lie on the couch, or put on some fun music!
